The office with four PC's
On Tuesday I received a call from a local company
that wanted help setting up some CCTV camera's
and was unsure if we could help. We explained
that would be no problem as we have quite a lot
of experience setting up CCTV.
We booked the call out for Thursday and agreed
we would charge £40+VAT per hour, it was
four camera's so should not take anymore than
a couple of hours. We completed the call out within
one and three quarter hours. Once this had been
completed the customer was so impressed with the
service she inquired about our IT support, however
she explained that because she only had four PC's
she was unsure if we could help. I soon explained
that we deal with all individuals and companies
from 1 to a 1000 computers.
As she had quite a small network we agreed that
she wanted the support but possibly not having
the budget for it.
I explained that we could offer her our pay-as-you-go
IT support, this basically meant that she bought
a block of five hours for £200+VAT, giving
her five hours engineer time. Through this it
meant she would get the advanced support package
which included emergency call-outs with a four
hour response time and also a trade account to
get discounts for any purchases.
She is absolutely delighted, and it wasn't until
after our conversation did she reveal for the
past three years she had been paying £50
per month, literally for no engineer time, just
for the ability to call for help with another
IT consultancy, and she was being charged £60+VAT
per hour.
That was nine months ago, we have never looked
back.

Do I need a server?
I received an email from a company which was
unsure about servers and what it could do for
there business.
Now servers can be a real mind field, there are
thousands, and the prices vary greatly. However
after a few minutes on the phone were arranged
for me to go and visit them.
Firstly I looked at there current setup, they
had seven machines all sharing through a single
computer with a shared folder, no real back-up
either.
We then sat down and had a good talk about there
current setup, is it working? Does it do everything
they need? What would you like it to do?
Firstly I was ready to just possibly beef up
the machine they are using as a 'server' then
arrange a more stable back-up. However after finding
out they have a person that works from home who
currently has to copy stuff from memory sticks
to be able to complete there work. Also having
no structured emails or calendar. The final thing
was the main director of the business had a property
abroad but had never really thought of being able
to work remotely.
With all the facts we came up with a few different
quotes for servers and also quotes for generally
backing up there current server.
This was three years ago, they went for a server.
The staff regularly all say they couldn't image
life without a server. They now have three people
who work from home and the owner now spends up
to half the year abroad, but still working the
same as before, albeit in the sun.
